Seafood is Heart Food!
The American Heart Association states:
Seafood is an ideal "heart healthy" food!
Most seafood is:
- Low in total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol
- High in protein
- Low in calories: a 3 1/2 ounce serving of white-fleshed fish supplies less
than 100 calories
- Low in sodium
- A good source of vitamins and minerals
- Quick and easy to prepare
To reduce risk of heart disease:
- Avoid cigarette smoking
- Control blood pressure
- Exercise regularly
- Follow a "heart healthy" diet
The American Heart Association recomments the following guidelines:
- Achieve and maintain ideal body weight by controlling calorie intake.
- Eat less total fat
- Limit amounts of foods containing saturated fat and cholesterol
- Substitute polyunsaturated margarines and vegetable oils for saturated
fats, wherever possible
- Decrease salt intake, especially by persons with, or at risk of developing
high blood pressure
- Vary food choices to meet the daily need for protein, vitamins, minerals
and other nutrients
- Making "heart healthy" dietary changes takes effort, but the effort may
lead to a longer and more active life
